You may think just because you don’t suffer from dry and flaky skin, that you don’t have to worry about your skin being dehydrated. However, it is just as important to keep your skin hydrated as it is with the rest of your body. In order for your body to continue looking and feeling its best, it needs hydration, no matter what type of skin you have!

Which leads us to this question: Do you know how to properly hydrate your skin? And is it the same as moisturizing? With the many choices that are out there now that we can easily get our hands on, how do we possibly figure out which product would be best suited for our skin? How do you give your skin the perfect dose of hydration your skin (not someone else’s) needs on a daily basis?

Hydration vs. Moisture: Is there a difference?

Most of the skin products on the market now use the terms ‘hydrator’ or ‘moisturizer’ to differentiate exactly how your skin can get the moisture it needs in order to stay hydrated. Do we have you confused yet?

Scientifically, the term moisturizer is actually used as loose term that includes several different types of moisturizer. These types include:

+ Emollients (fats and oils)

+ Squalene (oil)

+ Humectants

+ Occlusive

These moisturizers, in turn, help to lock in moisture and keep your skin hydrated.

For example, a really easy way to hydrate your skin is simply by using water. However, water on its own is not a strong enough ingredient to keep your skin moisturized. By the time you leave your bathroom, the water has completely evaporated. As the water evaporates off of your skin, it also takes your skin’s natural oils along with it. The more you wash your face without applying some sort of moisturizer or hydrator, for example, the more likely your skin will continue to dry out. Using a moisturizer helps seal in that water, keeping your skin happy and healthy!

If you already know you have dry skin, try using a thicker moisturizer. Some may suffer dry skin due to the weather changes occuring every season, but If you find your skin is dry all year round, then it’s actually your skin that is having a hard time retaining moisture. If that’s the case, you will need to make moisturizing a regular part of your skin care routine to create a protective seal on the surface of your skin to keep the moisture locked in (i.e., to keep it hydrated!).
