There’s a lot going on in the world of body hair removal, but if you ask us, the most exciting technology thus far has got to be the emergence of laser use. As it gains popularity, the tech only gets better. But is laser hair removal right for you?
Have a read for more info on the latest developments and different types of laser hair removal to see if it’s something you’d be interested in – with warmer weather just around the corner, we have a feeling it’ll get you just as excited as we are!
Laser Hair Removal Basics
First, the basics: Laser hair removal works by targeting the root of the hair and damaging it, to ensure permanent removal. The way this works is the laser itself zeros in on the pigment found in the follicle, meaning traditionally, it works especially well when there is a higher contrast between the hair and skin colour. But certain types of lasers work better for darker skin or lower contrast.
The Hair Growth Cycle and Why It Matters
The hair growth cycle consists of three stages: Anagen (active growth), Catagen (the shedding phase), and Telogen (the dormant or rest phase). When it comes to laser hair removal, the process is most effective during the hair’s active growth phase, or the anagen phase, which lasts approximately 2-3 weeks. This part of the hair growth cycle is ideal for targeting pigment and destroying the follicle, but it’s difficult to predict when this will be – which is why multiple treatments are typically required.
Common Types of FDA-Approved Lasers
Diode Lasers can selectively target a particular body part and effectively remove the hair without harming the surrounding skin. These lasers are most effective for dark hair, however, and less effective on lighter skin.
Alexandrite Lasers use an alexandrite gemstone to focus the laser beam. The wavelength of light it emits is specifically attracted to the melanin in your hair, so it acts by heating, and ultimately eliminating, the hair follicles.
The Coolglide Laser (ND YAG) This type of laser penetrates deeper than others, bypassing pigment in the skin, making the ND YAG laser more effective for darker skin types.
Syneron Candela Laser This is widely considered to be one of the best on the market for hair removal, and it’s our laser of choice at Body ‘N’ Bloom. Part of the reason it’s so effective is that it’s a dual platform laser, combining two separate wavelengths of light (Alexandrite and ND YAG). This also makes it ideal for a wider variety of hair and skin types. Additionally, our machines use a dynamic cooling device, cooling the skin between pulses, and minimizing any discomfort.
